We can measure the downloads of the file from our webserver, which will give us
a
good idea of the uptake at first.
Registration should certainly be required for writing messages on support
forums,
(but not for reading them, I think) - if we require a confirmed email address
this
ensures we can follow up bug reports, and also guards against most spammers.

Be wary of putting hurdles in the way of usage or participation. People who are
just
trying things out often resent having to fill in forms... they may decide not
to bother.

OK, just to record that we will have the setup.exe hosted on our server; we
will use
server logs to record how many people download it; we will have a support site
that
requires registration to enter (and prevent spammers getting on the forums)

Is there any way of getting a count of svn checkouts from googlecode?

Googlecode also provides counts of downloads and one can have 'featured'
downloads;
not sure if this might be better than hosting the download ourselves. No idea
about
SVN checkouts but I don't think so.
