Address #236 #247

Changes to address #236. Fixes to background plus waitbar work for large files.

Welcome back Sean. I haven't actually managed to reproduce the problem. My suspicion is that it arose from key presses during the long "hangs" , which I have addressed. I'm waiting to hear back from @Fredxxx .
