Hey there, good to see some progress in the field of ob-sql stuff.

Is there currently a way to connect to mariadb?

Hi. Yes, it should connect to mariadb out the box or with very few changes in order to provide environment variables. The supported DBs are the ones of sql.el:

db2 - informix - ingres - interbase - linter - mariadb - mysql - oracle - postgres - solid - sqlite - sybase - vertica
