Libpurple (used by Pidgin and Adium) often seems to fail to change the connection state to connected after seeing numeric 376 (End of MOTD) and will just hang in Connecting state.
It will also change the connection state when seeing numeric 251 and it seems to be much more reliable, so let's send it, too.
