Roku support #37159

Open khat33b opened 5 years ago

khat33b commented 5 years ago

Use case

Running an application in Android TV, Apple TV and Roku from the same codebase.

Proposal

Flutter should be able to run in Roku also using the same codebase.

Any video-content driven company is likely going to need Roku support. Let's look at the market data. There are approximately 1.14 billion streaming video devices in the global market in 2020. And yet the device footprint is highly fragmented. The Roku OS is the No. 1 smart TV OS in the U.S and in Canada, and powered more than one in three smart TVs sold in the U.S. during the first nine months of 2020 according to NPD. That is obviously needed. But it's difficult to make the case for a cross-platform development initiative when even the top OTT platforms aren't going to be supported other than Android TV.

Any news?

This would be amazing! However, at the moment, the only way to do this would be to compile from Dart to Brightscript (Roku's proprietary language).

I’d so love to see Roku support in Flutter! Would help me eliminate another codebase if I could meld my Roku channel codebase into my existing Flutter codebase where I build native apps for Android and iOS.

Any updates on this. Would be nice to see if someone has tried something on these lines. I'm coming after experimenting successfully with flutter-tizen for Samsung TVs.

This issue is a triage nightmare. The traditional way to plus one a github issue is to thumbs up the OP. The rest of this is just disrespectful, frankly.
