Why? Just why?
I want to see if the devs can find any. There is an international shortage of them apparently. But... if it's realism we are after... ;-) "Protection..." is in those aircraft manuals somewhere [surely] :-)
Realism, huh? There is no shortage. Every aircraft has its own set of covers and it carries it around the world every day.
Here is a list of 7 reasons why this is unnecessary. I was aiming for 10, but I'm running out of reasonable arguments.
a) This is a flight sim. People who use it want to pretend to be pilots. Pilots don't have anything to do with this. This is a maintenance task. b) Engine covers are only installed when an aircraft is parked over a long period. They are not very common. It's not like us engineers run around the airport all night and cover all the holes of the aircraft, just to uncover them the next morning. In the 13 years I worked as an aicraft engineer, I never got to install engine covers until the pandemic began in 2020. c) When an aircraft is being provisioned by maintenance, it is in a state "ready to fly". A pilot should normally never arrive at an aircraft and find the covers still installed. There might be a few exceptions here and there, of course. d) Just because a certain thing exists irl, doesn't mean it is of any use in a flight sim. I could list a million things that are realistic, but would never be in a flight sim. Why do we simply accept the fact that we spawn inside the aircraft? The crew must have gotten to the plane somehow. How did they get to the airport? What did they have for breakfast? The list is endless... e) You just press a button to remove the covers. It's a completely unnecessary additional button press. Pretty much like the "Press any key to start" splash screen that used to be in the first versions of MSFS. f) Show some respect for the hard work of us engineers. We work 24/7 to make sure that you and your family can get from point A to point B without having to worry about crashing and burning. Removing engine covers isn't as trivial as it sounds in reality. g) Speaking of realism: If we include this feature, I will demand that the departure is delayed for at least two hours - without the option to skip. Because that is the time me and my colleagues need to remove the covers, clean them, stow them (they remain on board of the aircraft), check for corrosion and damages underneath the covers, do the paperwork etc. Not even speaking of all the other things we would need to check and reactivate. As I said, it's not as trivial as it sound. When we return an aircraft to service, we start ~24 hours before the first flight is planned.
Could definately list at least 10 features that should / will be implemented before engine covers...
Thankyou for the short answer :-) They are part of the plane. See it in other flight sims. But.... they do look nice. Videographers would enjoy the realism too.
Note to Devs - I am asking this be added for consideration - or to added to a public list for other devs to contemplate, and then remove this post/request please. All I have got was a response from 1 person who avoided engine covers for 12 years and thinks onboard parts of the aircraft are not part of the plane and another person who thinks he is witty and clever with his childish sarcasm.
We are better than this.
@MjrIncident Hey, I think I owe you an apology. I didn't mean to rant at you like this and maybe I hit the wrong note.
It was my intention to lay out the arguments why I think that engine covers are unnecessary. Sure, our goal is realism, but we have to draw a line somewhere.
And finally: I'm not the one who decides anything, just to clarify.
Yeah. No.
@MjrIncident I'd like to personally apologize for the behaviour of my colleagues who have commented on your issue. While I agree with their points regarding the engine covers, it was in no way an appropriate response.
Other devs, please refrain from making more comments on this issue. We get it, you don't like the idea. Doesn't mean OP has to be roasted about it.
We've decided to reopen the issue as we don't usually close requests we do not wish to implement.
Please keep further conversation on topic, and employ constructive phrasing if you have further arguments to make.
Apologies accepted. I apologize too. I didn't plan to upset anyone or propose unrealistically. I was going to ask where is the W.C. too, but I don't want to be assassinated ^_^ All good guys/gals. Keep up your outstanding work. And thankyou for everything you have been creating for us.

Generic redish/orange ones. With lots of oil splash marks and blemishes (and letters/markings that mean something to someone somewhere in the know). ^_^
