Hmm, I'm not wholly sure. I'm sorely tempted, you're right in that https is the way to go, but Firefox itself doesn't make that jump: try typing www.example.com into the URL bar, and you'll see the first option is for http://.
(this is definitely not me trying to put off figuring out pull requests!
Of course, it's a bit more complicated than that, as the defaults are only applied on first-run. I'd need to patch-up the prefs loading to see if the current prefs for those entries match the (old) non-SSL ones and edit them on the fly.
It's 2018, so less data "inspectable" increases security not that much, but at least a little bit.. :)
