Request: default skin, body, choose vanilla hairstyle, regenerate facegen #146

This obviously might be outside the scope of this mod, but it would be really nice for NPC overhauls that overly "glam" the NPCs so that they have their own 8k glossy skin, modern super model hairstyle, etc. These NPCs have well-crafted faces, but it would be nice to make them fit within Skyrim a bit better if it was possible to force them to use default body (whatever you have installed), default skin texture (whatever you have installed), to be able to pick from vanilla hairstyles, and then regenerate facegens.

The process for doing this manual is beyond tedious, and it would be cool from a user perspective to think "Hey, I like that face, but lets tone it down a bit to fit into Skyrim by selecting default options"

This is a similar request to one that was made informally before - essentially just bringing back the option to remove custom bodies, which used to be how it worked but caused too many problems with face/body inconsistencies ("neck seams", although not really).

One way, and probably the only way, to do this reliably would be to edit all facegens for NPCs using a custom body to point back to the default diffuse/normal head textures before removing the custom body. There's no guarantee that it would look good, i.e. the lips or eyes or warpaint or whatever might be wildly inappropriate for the default textures - but there's a good chance it would work most of the time and at least the face and body would be consistent.

It would have to be opt-in, not sure if global or per-NPC or something in between. We have to be careful with custom bodies because they might not be purely aesthetic - might be something like an HDT wig.

I want to second this request, in fact I came here to make it. Having an option to force an NPC to use vanilla texture records and bodies, and just carry over the face shape/tints/headparts, would be a godsend. Whether the output looks great or not with actual vanilla textures I don't think is terribly important, since I think most people doing this are probably doing it so that they can replace it with a different non-vanilla texture and body. It would also make it far easier to use tools like AutoBody and EBD, which only operate on vanilla records.

I'll third the motion. Skin mods can have such a dramatic impact on the overall aesthetic of the world, and having a couple of standalone NPCs in the mix who have skin setups incongruous with your own can basically make otherwise nice NPCs look like space aliens. e.g., If you're using a gritty, natural look built around Realore Mature or something similar, then an NPC replacer that is made with a "porcelain doll" look built with something like The Pure will be effectively unusable. This can certainly be a "use at your own risk" feature, but having the option might open up possibilities for combinations of NPCs that would otherwise look awful together.

I much prefer avoiding custom bodies, too, when possible, but for me, the main reason I really try to priorities "default" replacers and follower mods over "standalone" versions is the skin.
