open branch with slash such as feature/persistence_branch_fail
exit neovim and observe error (if you are quick...it disappears fast) or call require('persistence').current()

I think the slash just needs to be replaced with '%'

Calling
require('persistence').current()
returns:/home/catgoose/.local/state/nvim/sessions/%home%catgoose%git%do-the-needful.nvim-feature/7-zellij_terminal_support.vim
the slash is being interpretted as a directory
