Proposal for a new community action [To give talks in high-schools] #1

This proposal was created by @jorgegalindocruces originally in https://github.com/folkswhocode/awesome-diversity/issues/24, and was moved here for further discussion.

What is the main theme of the proposal?

Reading this article of Rosa Rodriguez, I was thinking about the point sparked her vocation to be an engineer (not Jurassic Park movie 😂, the open-doors activity in the Faculty of Software Development).

In my city, a few of high schools around us, are contacting with our company to ask for give a talk in their classrooms (last year of the high school is the right moment to figure out your career). I think It could be awesome to organize a few of talks about the history of the technology to give in high schools, but from all the points of view, mentioning men and women that were key pieces into and try to share the message from an inclusive point of view.

Resume of the proposal

To use this movement to do a call to action of people/high-schools that want to give/receive talks. To use this repository to work between together on common slides to figure out the right way to share the message. To list the high schools, we contact and we do talks I would like:

To have a point of view from everyone, especially, from women in tech. Cheers, and thank in advance!!!

I love this ❤️

Do you have any specific structure for the talk in mind? 😄

Sorry! I missed the update on this issue entirely.

A few weeks ago I was invited by a high school of Chiclana de la Frontera to give a talk to the students there are thinking to take their path.

We talked about many different things, but I used this talk to do a little "test," I asked about: how they think it has to look a software developer. I wondered about our stereotype.

They described a guy with a woodcutter shirt and a calculator in his pocket chest. 🤦‍♂️

After that, I started to talk about Margaret Hamilton and all the awesome things she achieved. I could see how was changing the perspective and we finished talking about how the diversity is a must in all the sides of your life and how we have a problem in our tech industry.

Pros of this action: I think to do something like an activity between the attendees (maybe with groups) could be a great way to describe the problem and to see the solutions.

Cons of this action: The main problem I found it is the way I did it. A white guy is talking and showing the issues into the lack of diversity in our sector. Ok, 🤦‍♂️. I think I am not the right people to talk about that, but, also, I don't know if I have a solution for that, because, even I love to help in all I can.

Here a proposal: Look for local volunteers (from an unrepresented minority) to do this kind of actions, or, at least, do it together.

Thoughts?
