The repo download separately as suggested in #2 comment works but the error
still exits and should be resolved.

This worked for me...
curl http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/git-repo-downloads/repo >
~/bin/repo
chmod a+x ~/bin/repo
(from http://www.marshut.com/wrrts/repo-release-1-12-4.html)

I can't get past this error. I downloaded curl as instructed, but I still get
this error.

For me, the problem was that there is a older repo in /usr/local/bin.

For me, even I downloaded and ran the latest repo launcher from
http://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/git-repo-downloads/repo, the issue was
still there. However, I removed my '~/.repoconfig' directory, then the issue
was gone.

Remove the old '~/.repoconfig' directory and used the secure https version and
that worked

I'm getting the same error as #10 today, so this still isn't fixed, apparently.
Removing ~/.repoconfig and using the version of repo from
https://commondatastorage.googleapis.com/git-repo-downloads/repo did not help.
