Initially the failures were related to a 504 Gateway Timeout from the CATMA 5 API. This was resolved by changing the timeout in the nginx config on the CATMA 5 server.
However, the migration would still fail after a long time. If I remember correctly this was due to the GitLab server being hammered by a lot of requests and failing to respond quickly enough at some stage, thus causing an exception in CATMA 6.
