make hollow symbols on map? #19

@beckybanbury, your map is looking great, except that overlapping points make it look like we have much less data for each variable than we actually do. I wonder if this could be solved by using hollow symbols of different shape for each variable. It may still be tricky to visualize a map of data for each variable, but would at least convey the fact that many of these sites have data for multiple variables.

Then, I think it would be good to make a multi-panel figure for the SI mapping each variable independently. We could refer to it in the legend of this figure.
