refining variables set #26

Let's define a set of variables and stick to it consistently in all tables, figures, etc. Figures don't have to include all variables when not relevant, but generally it will help to keep a consistent set.

My (tentative) recommendation:

Please let me know if you think this works well. There's plenty of space to refine!

@teixeirak I think this is a good set, and it includes everything we might want to discuss. My only concern is that visually it will get hard to distinguish 9 separate variables on the regression graphs, especially if I plot the points like I have been; do you think it's worth splitting them into two groups (maybe productivity fluxes and respiration fluxes?) for graphing them?

teixeirak commented 5 years ago

Good idea, although there’s only 2 respiration fluxes. A more even division may major fluxes and flux components(?).

Do you think this is a good way to split the fluxes and present the plots?

I think for the multi-plots presenting multiple climate variables it would be simpler to present a subset of the variables above, otherwise we'll just end up with a lot of plots; do you think just presenting the major fluxes would be best for this?

I think this works. Another option could be to split it up into three panels: (1) whole-ecosystem fluxes (GPP, NPP, R_auto), aboveground (ANPP and components), and belowground (BNPP, R_root).

Please be sure to put units on the y-axis, and ensure that the axes are scaled the same for each variable.

beckybanbury commented 5 years ago

@teixeirak In terms of including units on the y-axis, because I scaled the data, the units aren't meaningful as measures of productivity (and the label shouldn't actually be MgC ha yr). Shall I add a scale on the y-axis and just label it "Productivity (scaled values)"?

That makes sense.
