Storytelling Bounty - Personal AI assistants #14

Bounty concept

In the Existential Hope-podcast, we invite scientists to speak about long-termism. Each month, we drop a podcast episode where we interview a visionary scientist to discuss the science and technology that can accelerate humanity towards desirable outcomes. One of the questions we always ask is for the scientist to provide an example of a potential eucatastrophe. The phrase “eucatastrophe” was originally coined by JRR Tolkien as “the sudden happy turn in a story which pierces you with a joy that brings tears”

In a paper published by the Future of Humanity Institute, written by Owen Cotton-Barratt and Toby Ord, they use Tolkien’s term to suggest that ”an existential eucatastrophe is an event which causes there to be much more expected value after the event than before.” I.e. the opposite of a catastrophe.

Telling stories can help us make what seems abstract become real and clear in our minds. Therefore we have now created a bounty based on this prompt. Use this event as a story-device to show us the picture of a day in a life where this happens. How would this make us feel? How would we react? What hope can people get from this?

An example of a Eucatastrophe by Anthony Aguirre (Metaculus, Future of Life Institute)

“Widespread availability of personal AI assistants without self interest that empowers and assists individuals in achieving their goals.” Imagine a very powerful AI system that doesn't have self interest, that works for you personally in advancing your own goals and interests. This would empower individuals, and would use high powered information technologies for people rather than against them. It would be a personal assistant deluxe: A loyal AI assistant.

It would get to know you really well, and then help you achieve your goals. Rather than getting to know you really well so it can manipulate you like some other systems may do. The eucatastrophe would be to have widespread availability of these high powered, loyal AI assistants.

Very high powered ones could help you do science or solve difficult problems, and other ones can just be there to help you with your everyday life and navigating this incredibly complicated world that we're in that is full of information dynamics, and frankly things that are oftentimes trying to take advantage of you.

This would be a companion that wouldn't be annoying such as Siri or Alexa, because you wouldn't feel like you're in conflict with it all the time. It doesn't run counter to your complicated desires and goals, but is explicitly constructed to help you figure out what those complicated desires and goals are, and realize them on an individual basis.

Bounty prompt

Describe a day in the life when we have widespread availability of personal AI assistants without self interest that empowers and assists individuals in achieving their goals. Submit your bounty-response below for your chance to be rewarded 0.15 ETH.

I intend to write a short story that tells about a day in the life of a character, who has recently started using an AI personal assistant. This is the first time I am writing a story with an eucatastrophe and I am excited about experimenting with this type of plot twist. Best of luck to everyone writing! 11) digitea00 has started work.

I've already put about 6-8 hours of thought into the concept for this piece. Should now just be a matter of pounding it out, and polishing it off.

Very excited as this has allot of overlap with several pet passion projects I've been working on for years. AI is all too often portrayed as alien, inhuman, and innately hostile. I think it's really important for us to find the positive possibilities that could come out of this shift, if we manage our relationship to AI in a healthy and sustainable way.

The plan:

Going to aim to get this done by friday May 6th. Good luck everyone! <3 14) bagusbrajamusti has started work.

The following are the threats and dangers of AI to human life:

  1. Unemployment

Sophisticated AI technology can take over human work. As a result, there will be a lot of unemployment. According to a 2019 Brookings Institution study, there are 36 million people whose jobs are prone to being replaced by automation. Then at least 70% of their work, from sales, market analysis, to warehouse work, can be done by AI.

Although AI is also said to be able to create new jobs, John C. Havens argues that the jobs created cannot cover the jobs that AI eliminates. At least that's what the author of Heartificial Intelligence: Embracing Humanity and Maximizing Machines thinks.

Advertisement for you: Nikita Mirzani Shows off a Smooth Body, Luckily it's not smudged! Advertisement by According to Havens, he once interviewed a boss from a legal consulting firm about machine learning. At that time he wanted to hire more people, but he was also required to achieve certain results by his shareholders.

  1. Privacy breach

In a paper entitled 'The Malicious Use of Artificial Intelligence: Forecasting, Prevention, and Mitigation' published in February 2018, 26 researchers from 14 institutions across various sectors discovered a number of dangers that AI could pose in less than five years.

'Malicious use of AI', as the title of the 100-page report goes, explains how AI can threaten digital security, with AI trained to commit crimes, hack, or social engineer victims, and so on.

The same goes for privacy. The closest example is the Chinese government's move to use facial recognition technology to detect the movement of its citizens, be it in offices, schools, or various other public places.

  1. Deepfake

Deepfake is also an AI product that can change the face and voice in a video. At the beginning of the appearance of deepfake videos, it was still easy to judge their authenticity. But now deepfake technology has become more sophisticated and it is difficult to distinguish which videos are processed by deepfakes or original videos. In the future, of course, AI for deepfake processing will be even more sophisticated.

  1. Automatic weapons

Just imagine if there was an AI-controlled weapon system, and the AI decided to launch a nuclear weapon, or maybe a biological weapon. Or maybe an adversary is manipulating data to reverse an AI-controlled missile to attack the sender.
