There are lots of deprecation warnings for ghc-7.10 and ghc-8.0.1

[x] remove module wide overlapping instance pragma
[ ] replace Monad.Trans.Error with Monad.Trans.Except
[ ] use traceIO instead of putTraceMsg
[ ] use the new testing framwork (see branch newTestingFramework )
