replace missing icon image #183

Closed fossfreedom closed 11 years ago

The current missing icon image is ugly IMHO - and yes this issue is in the scheme of things - trivial...

and yes - I know beauty is "in the eye of the beholder" ... but...

thinking of replacing the icon with maybe something like this free icon or something similar:

Personally, I do not dislike the current image. One thing to consider is that the new image should have neutral colors to fit with most distribution themes.

EDIT: Just a suggestion: Instead of a musical note, use a speaker icon like this one:

Let's bring this discussion forward, if you wish. This is what the competition is using:

Banshee is quite original. I don't think RB has an official logo that we could use to make a missing album art with it though.

Here are some possible options that we could use:

missing-art-options

  1. Nothing to say except that the black is too striking on the eyes.
  2. The note has a nice 3d effect. I think we could make it in tones of grey and it would look better in all distros.
  3. The same shape of note used by MS but in a simple design like itunes.
  4. Even more iTuness...
  5. A rip-off of Windows Media player but in grey tone. Does not look good in my tests with RB.
  6. The idea I presented before. I think it is nice but is it too extreme? We should try to obtain some coherence in the design as we approach release 1.0.

I will send you the svg files by email if you want to try them in RB. Let me know what you think.

@jrbastien

I've uploaded screenshots showing the new icons in dark-theme vs light-theme (mediterranean night vs radiance)

6) seems to work very well - certainly very striking 4) seems to work as well - maybe slightly too light though 3) is too striking for my taste 2) & 5) dont really work

Are these all your designs? - if not, any idea what the licenses are? (GPL? Creative Commons?)

jrbastien commented 11 years ago

We seem to agree on the different options. That leaves us with basically two choices:

Given 3 is too striking and 4 is too light, I have created one with a mid-grey tone.

With option 6, the more I look at it, the more I like it. In fact, it matches the Rhythmbox icon. I have also created a darker version for my tests.

See them here on Ubuntu 12.04 with the Ambiance theme: http://imgur.com/a/GTVnA

I have made these icons myself but I have taken the speaker here: http://www.iconarchive.com/show/super-vista-general-icons-by-iconshock/music-icon.html The license is Free for non-commercial use. I think this is ok to use it but we would probably need to thanks this gentleman in the release note.

Unless you would like some more mock-ups, I'm satisfied with the new icon. If you feel it still needs improvement, do not hesitate to ask.

fossfreedom commented 11 years ago

I content. I know you were considering how the icon looks with the new album info within the coverart capability - I assume the new icon works here as well.

I'll close this for now - but just drop me a line if you have any further thoughts.

I say that the image with the info within the missing cover imageis not optimal but given the goal of this plugin is to complete the missing cover, this is not much of a problem. I can't image someone using the coverart browser plugin to look at series of speakers!
