Topic: the role of GitHub and Microsoft #41

In the pilot episode you said something along the lines of, "yes, it's on GitHub, we know who owns GitHub, ha ha ha".

I think it would be interesting to have the question about GitHub and Microsoft (GitHub is owned by Microsoft) as a topic for an episode, explaining what you meant there and why you choose to have this repository on GitHub.

Is Microsoft a great friend of FOSS, or an enemy to be avoided, or something in between?

Is it a problem for FOSS if a huge company becomes a de-facto gatekeeper deciding who can contribute?

Personally I would prefer to not have a GitHub account, because I don't like the fact that everyone is forced to a single proprietary platform in order to contribute to FOSS. FOSS should be free, that is what the F in FOSS is about. The current situation is good for Microsoft, and bad for FOSS.

Anyway, my suggestion is to have such questions as a topic for a podcast episode.

Software Freedom Conservancy have a "Give Up GitHub!" page with some more arguments about this: https://sfconservancy.org/GiveUpGitHub/

Is there an obvious guest we should invite and take this discussion with if we would do this topic in an episode?

You could invite someone from one of the alternatives such as CodeBerg or SourceHut, or someone from Software Freedom Conservancy who could explain their arguing behind https://sfconservancy.org/GiveUpGitHub/
