Cleanup code and make better dev practices

Issue description

Based on the discussions with @rahulporuri, got the following ideas, which can be picked up later on case-by-case basis:

• [ ] Audit the project code - remove unwanted functions, style rules etc. and make it more optimised.
• [ ] Add docstrings to methods - that would bring more context and understanding
• [ ] Write up coding standards and practices for the project to be followed by all devs and contributors
