Project background

This project came through the pipeline through Outlandish, a co-op that shares the office with Founders & Coders.

The POs - Drew, Barbara and David - are all individuals who have experience working in community development. In the longterm, they are interested in developing an online hub that would allow for local communities to see what is happening around them. This online hub would also have a network mapping function that would allow communities to create new connections.

Network mapping and/or the building of a platform is not something that is in the scope of our one month MVP. Our task is to create a resource that would help others build a hub in their local community. The creation of a game allows them to examine what tools might be helpful and get them thinking about putting their plans into action (strategic planning and resource allocation).

Main Problem - How do we...?

• Create a game that helps individuals develop plans for a hub / platform that would increase local connectivity

• Community connectors / builders / organisers (for example, someone working for a local organisation that wants to get connected with other local organisations so that they can collaborate on events or share resources)

• As a user, I want a tool that shows me both online and offline methodologies related to community building and helps me develop skills in strategic planning and resource allocation

Basic App Features

• Instructions on how to play the game

• Option to play with your own reality/context

  • You will be asked a small series of questions to narrow the deck down to resources applicable to your needs

• Option to play using a pre-written scenerio and potentially a persona

  • Example scenario: Londontown is an urban area with a dense and mixed population. Community groups are fragmented and not particularly tech-oriented. There is an imaginative but underfunded community-based initiative that employs community builders.
  • Example persona: Lucy is a middle-aged volunteer who wants to become more involved in her community

• A deck of cards with many different types of online and offline tools for building communities. Each card has a value on how much 'resources' it costs

  • Examples: Facebook +1, Twitter +1, in-person community workshop at the local community center +5

• A table that would help you plan for how you would allocate your chosen methodologies
