From Netscape to Node

Origins

Mosaic Netscape launched in 1994
First version took 75% of the market in 4 months
Netscape wanted a scripting language that would be written directly in the HTML pages to "glue" plugins etc together
They hired Brendan Eich, originally with the goal of embedding Scheme into the browser
Netscape struck a deal with Sun to include Java in the browser, so they decided the scripting language needed to fit the syntax of Java, which excluded Scheme.
The prototype for this scripting language was written in 10 days, to defend the proposal internally.
The language was developed under the name Mocha, released as LiveScript and then renamed Javascript when during beta testing to give the impression the language was more connected to Java, which was a hot new language at the time.

Microsoft released competing scripting languages for Internet Explorer 3: JScript.
JScript was a reverse-engineered implementation of JavaScript.
IE3 and Netscape Navigator were very incompatible, which led to websites having to tell visitors which browser it was best viewed in.

Should this be something that gets put in the course i.e. master-reference? Or elsewhere?

@jsms90 It was here in marketing because it was going to be turned into a blog post. @ConchobarMacNessa did this ever go anywhere?
