When using the freecast version of a spell granted by your race, you can select a higher level spell slot and get the benefit of a higher level cast, even though you arent using a spell slot.
For example this chthonic tiefling gets false life at level 3 and can get the benefit of an upcast while using its free cast which i believe should always be as the lowest level of the spell unless stated otherwise, unless a rule change has occurred that i am unaware of
Now it could be with how the new phb has set up the free cast, but i think its more a system issue with automating the setting up part of the free cast
