Open Game License Compatibility #240

Looking over the compendium datasets, I think they may not currently be compatible with the Open Game License despite using the data from Nethys. The artwork is used there by special dispensation, if I'm not mistaken, and we've got Golarion Organizations mentioned in some feats and such, which needs to be scrubbed.

e.g. Lastwall Sentry Dedication needs to become "Sentry Dedication" or something, Red Mantis Assassin needs to become "Crimson Assassin" the examples are from Pathbuilder 2e, whose developer brought this up in a discussion about the "import from Pathbuilder" module here.

Here's Paizo's Community USe Policy

@The-Magic-Sword I think you are partially incorrect. The Community Use Policy states "As long as you comply with the Community Use Policy, you may descriptively reference trademarks, proper names (characters, deities, artifacts, places, etc.), locations and characters from products listed in Section 1 of this list"

Under these rules anyone can indeed use the proper names like Lastwall Sentry and Red Mantis Assassin. Someone will look into the Art as I believe you are correct about that.

I think the trick is "descriptively reference" does not mean "use directly" it means referring to it indirectly. PFSRD, and Pathbuilder, and other sources I've seen use those names I brought up (e.g. Crimson Assassin) as 'descriptive references' as opposed to it's proper name.

It's like how 5e compatible products describe themselves that way or "compatible with the world's oldest roleplaying game" or whatever so they don't use the Dungeons and Dragons trademark.

We should check with Paizo about it, because I know the other works that I just mentioned have had direct contact with them and do scrub themselves of proper names.

I'm in the process of removing the AoN artwork. Hope to have it removed in the next day or two.

I'll be reviewing the OGL license document to ensure it is updated correctly and we'll start a review of all the compendium data to scrub out the content that doesn't apply.

Hi, I brought this issue up on reddit as I thought this project was working under pure Open Game License rather than the Community Use Policy. The Community Use Policy should cover the material you are using - but - just to make sure you are covered properly, have you checked with Paizo that the Community Use Policy applies here? I know the module is free and it should be fine, but the VTT Foundry isn't, which creates a possible grey zone. It is better to be safe than sorry later!

Closed in favor of https://gitlab.com/hooking/foundry-vtt---pathfinder-2e/-/issues/352 which should contain everything that has yet to be done.
