Heroku -> EC2 Test Deployment #14

Here are my current 2 problems with deploying the production test service to Heroku:

  1. It doesn't work; flying Sphinx doesn't want to fly and the search feature is causing terrible, terrible crashes to everything everywhere and all sorts of hell goes down.
  2. It's expensive; in order to even sphinx on Heroku, it's $15 a month in addition to having to buy a worker for another $15 a month. This is highly inefficient as I can get all of this for free on Amazon's EC2 for the time being since we're not yet worried about scaling up.
  3. It's not that much easier on Heroku. As we can all testify, working with rails is hard enough as it is without having to deal with crap tons of stuff breaking left and right. Perhaps we can claim we have "support" on Heroku, but I've personally never gotten any.

As such, I will be deploying to EC2 hopefully by this Saturday.

googling seems to show 2 results.

  1. rubber (gem?)
  2. an ubuntu server image optimized for ec2

yeah, rubystack's BitNami provides an excellent and cheap service via aws. We should see this deployed by tonight.

I am very close to getting it working; but for some reason I'm getting a lot of broken pipes for some reason.

SpinnakerSix commented 13 years ago

specifics? broken pipes can mean anything from using the wrong libraries to needing a new plummer.

foxnewsnetwork commented 13 years ago

connection to ec2 just breaks randomly with nothing to denote it in any error logs
