I found this answer on another forum:
You can use wtf.os with Vistas and original air units. When you switch to O3 mode then it will use msp-osd DJI came up with. Wtfos is only for the original Fpv system side.
Upgrading goggles will wipe out the wtfos hack. But after upgrading you can reinstall it. All works fine and and I go back and forth on my goggles.
If you have used wtfos with nice fonts it is way prettier then DJIs o3 msp-osd. Crazy amateur hackers can create a nicer system than DJI.
Heres hoping they root the o3 side and can make things better for us.
Rooting allows you to run and install a custom operating system on the goggles (WTFOS) along with custom non-approved 3rd party packages on the hardware when used with the original DJI FPV System firmware. One good example is giving users the ability to make use of the full Betaflight OSD which isn't natively available under the original DJI FPV System firmware unless you root the goggles (and also the Air Unit) and install the msp-osd package. Other approved and tested packages can be found HERE.
None of the WTFOS stuff works with the DJI O3 Air Unit and that already has native support for full Betaflight OSD anyway, so you don't need to root or hack your goggles to get that functionality.
If you have no reason to root your goggles (because you're not using a Caddx Vista, RunCam Link or full size OG DJI Air Unit) then I wouldn't bother wasting your time doing so because it will just be a load of work for no gain as it won't offer you anything when using an O3 Air Unit.
Correct, wtfos doesn't provide any functionality for the O3 side and we are not in a rush to do so because DJIs firmware already supports the critical stuff (HD OSD).
If you have problems with installing wtfos erasing your O3 functionality then you should use butter to go to V01.07.0000 and then re-install wtfos: https://github.com/fpv-wtf/butter#usage
Wtfos on the old AU side can co-exist with O3 in the other modes, but there's a bug in DJI Assistant that makes it only flash 1 slot of 2, which can result in it appearing that re-installing wtfos removes the O3 mode from the goggles. Re-flashing 01.07.0000 with butter will fix this.
I hope to be clear. I have DJI Goggles V2 properly rooted. I can access the CLI, activate the package and so on. They are updated to the latest firmware in order to be used with DJI O3 and BF 4.4.
With the msp-osd service enabled and fakeHD enabled, I still can't get the HD OSD. Also the fonts in the SD are not read. Even if I copy them to the blackbox.
I can't figure out what's missing to see the changed fonts. I continue to see the default OSD
