Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

Description of the bug/feature.
==================================
My gadgets are not loading into iGoogle. All the gadget says is,
"Information is temporarily unavailable." I can view the gadget XML fine
from the web, and the web server logs appear to indicate the pages are
being served up to the FeedFetcher-Google bot.

PLEASE FILL OUT THE FOLLOWING FOR A BUG REPORT ONLY:

What steps will reproduce the problem?
======================================
1. Add my gadgets to your iGoogle page (http://geeklad.com/downloads/web-
definitions.xml or http://geeklad.com/downloads/thesaurus.xml for
instance).
2. Load up iGoogle.
3. The gadgets do not render.

What is the expected output?
============================
The rendering of the gadget is expected.

What is the actual output?
==========================
Information is temporarily unavailable.

Here are the lines from the web server log:

74.125.16.1 - - [03/Aug/2009:12:51:58 -0500] "GET /downloads/web-
definitions.xml HTTP/1.1" 200 18728 "-" "FeedFetcher-Google;
(+http://www.google.com/feedfetcher.html)"
72.14.194.1 - - [03/Aug/2009:12:51:58 -0500] "GET /downloads/thesaurus.xml
HTTP/1.1" 200 24681 "-" "FeedFetcher-Google;
(+http://www.google.com/feedfetcher.html)"

Which browsers have you experienced this on?
============================================
Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Exploder.

Which operating systems have you experienced this on?
=====================================================
Windows XP

Please provide any additional information below.
I've also copied and pasted the XML into GGE, and the gadget serves up
fine, so it doesn't appear to be an issue with the code itself. Please
help!

I've been monitoring my gadgets with analytics. It seems the gadget is still
being
rendered for some users but not all, because I'm still seeing some traffic
going to
them.

It seems the requests are never even making it to the web server. I tried to
visit:

http://www.gmodules.com/ig/proxy?url=http://geeklad.com

and the page turns up blank. I submitted a ticket with my host provider, and
they
were able to visit the page with absolutely no problem. I also tried to visit
a page
that did not exist to see if the request was even made to the web server. It
was
not, because I saw no 404 line in the server logs for the request I made.

I've attached the screenshot that the associate from my hosting provider sent
me.

I'm not getting this gadget displayed in my homepage. Will this be fixed?

Even if the URL is reachable, requests through the proxy will time out after a
few
second. How close, geographically, are you to the server that hosts your gadget?
Trans-continental traffic would introduce more than enough latency to cause the
behavior you see.

My host is geeklad.com, which is on a HostGator shared server. The IP for the
server
is 74.54.143.82, which according to a geo-IP locator is located in Dallas, TX.
I'm
located in Jacksonville, FL, which is unlikely to be too far to cause a delay
of a
few seconds.

According to analytics, most of my visitors are now coming from the UK (prior
to the
move, the vast majority were in the USA). Perhaps geographic location may not
be the
issue, since UK users appear to have no problem rendering the gadget.

Something must have changed recently, because I'm seeing the gadget render on
my
homepage once again. The analytics chart is now a nice wave as it was
previously, but
unfortunately with half the traffic. :( But at least it does appear to be
working
now.

I have the same issue with http://www.seebeforeyoudie.net (and any other site
hosted
on the same server).
I'm getting blank pages when accessing http://www.gmodules.com/ig/proxy?
url=http://www.seebeforeyoudie.net (and http://www.gmodules.com/ig/proxy?
url=http://www.seebeforeyoudie.net/google_content.xml which is the gadget XML)
but
there are no issues with this page from any other location (including Pingdom
global
monitoring).

Can somebody from Google look into it?

Same issue for

http://www.comedycentral.com/rss/jokes/indexcached.jhtml

Works some of the time, doesn't work for others. When I "maximize" the widget,
I DO
see the proper data, even if the mini version of the widget gives the error.

I have been having this problem reported to me from many users, on many
different
ISP's. My server is located in a data warehouse in lower Manhattan and is 3
ports/hops from a core router on my ISP. tracert's to users IP's that have
reported
these errors, from my server, have resulted with short round trip times.

Diagnosing the connection between the originating server and iGoogle can be
difficult. While it looks like there was no conclusive answer found with this
issue, there have been changes to iGoogle (and possibly the gadget spec hosts)
since the time this issue was initially filed which complicates tracking down
the original problem.

Closing this issue but feel free to open another in the new tracker at
http://code.google.com/p/igoogle-developers/wiki/IssuesTab?tm=3 with as much
detail as you have.
