[Discussion] Remove downvotes? #153

Open rmehta opened 2 years ago

I think it should be harder to disagree than just give a downvote. Not giving an upvote is a sign already. And if someone wants to disagree, they should just make a post (?)

Most platforms I have seen - discourse, twitter, linkedin etc don't have downvotes. It also makes things more partisan.

linkedin etc don't have downvotes.

Linkedin NEEDS dislike button. It's filled with fake garbage posts which won't be so viral if dislikes existed. Or at least the algorithm will filter it out.

Youtube removed dislikes recently and recommendations became shit, can't judge video just by looking at numbers anymore. Though youtube isn't quite "discussion" format.

Not giving an upvote is a sign already

It's totally not. No upvote = didn't read, indifferent or many other things.

Sometimes no detailed rebuttals are required. Just a thumb down is enough to convey your opinion. Look at this platform only, plenty of community discussions around how to take software projects forward and random people who care about project voice their opinion by :+1: / :-1: Not everyone needs to have a detailed debate or "approval" on everything.

These emojis also kinda work as simple yes/no polls :)

IMO we should allow all emojis. https://github.com/frappe/gameplan/issues/52

I won't thumbs down your post, but I disagree :-)

Since disagreements are harder to digest, I think they deserve a full comment and explanation (because disagreements are harder to digest... 😅)

Currently, emojis in reactions are not associated with positive or negative emotion. It's only visual.

I agree with Ankush: no reactions can mean "didn't read" or "no opinion".

And if someone wants to disagree, they should just make a post (?)

This has happened with me. I "thumbs down"ed a post, and the author messaged me privately about it. Then I made a comment on that post explaining my disagreement.

It is already hard to make people write about their disagreement, there should be a way to express it via reactions.

There are two negative (👎, 💩) against 18 positive emotions as reactions.

Exactly why there should not be a thumbs down. People get very "triggered" when they just get a thumbs down without an explanation.

Also 20 emojis are way too much noise. Just 5 should be fine.

In general, thumbs up and down should be reserved for a pilot taking off from an air carrier in rough seas to say he is ready. In other words, Life and Death situations, in as simple form as possible.

Everyone should write a post.
