binaries\win64\shipping-thiefgame.exe = requires x64(64bit) library
binaries\win32\shipping-thiefgame.exe = requires x86(32bit) library
Open the file (but do not save it) in notepad and search for xinput,
mark down the names of the dll's that turn up i the search, these are what you
need to be using

To all who still don't get it.
Place the x64 version of the lib both the dll files
i.e
xinput1_3.dll & dinput8.dll inside the Binaries\Win64 folder if you are playing
on 64-bit OS or use the libararies from the 32-bit version and place it inside
Binaries\Win32 folder of the game.
Now place the gdb file and the ini file configured for your controller in the
respective folder.
Also use the x360 app for the xinput9_1_0.dll file.
If you are playing on Windows 8/8.1 rename the xinput1_3.dll to xinput1_4.dll
(This worked for me.. If it works with xinput1_3.dll no need to rename).

Do we need to change or any hookmask inside the gbd file for it to work? It
still not working for me.

Hi rahuliye I have follow all steps of your guide and I'm also on Win 8.1 like
you but if I rename xinput1_3.dll in xinput1_4.dll x360ce app will crash. and
without renaming controller don't work, I have ps4 controller with many other
games never a problem

dll created by (contained within) the app is not supported (it has issues with
10+ button controllers and the right stick
this game should not use the xinput1_4 file at all, no games supporting windows
7.

Took me some figuring out,but made it work, here's how I did it step by step :
If you're on a 32-bit system, get the 32-bit library (x86 version) at the
download page.
If you're on a 64-bit system, get the 64-bit library (x64 version) at the
download page.
Unrar it and copy the xinput1_3.dll and dinput8.dll and x360ce.gdb into the
folder of thief.. either the 32bit or the 64bit folder.
32bit : Thief/Binaries/WIn32
64bit : Thief/Binaries/Win64.
Download the app file from Downloads, run x360ce.exe, let it make the files
neccesary. Then Copy x360ce.exe and the 360ce.ini over to your game folder as
well.
Run x360ce.exe, go to settings, under Installed Files, check "xinput9_1_0.dll".
Close the application. Open x360ce.ini in notepad and UNDER
"Allowonlyonecopy=1" write " Version=1"
Save and close the ini file.
Now start the game with the .exe in the folder and it should work.

so the game explicitly uses xinput9_1_0
Is there any input at all when x360ce is not used?

For DS4 controllers, there is an xinput driver available in much the same way
one for DS3 controllers.

i also coudnt make the gamepad work.
i did what "#15 Davy0611...@gmail.com" said. it still didnt work. then i saw
another post on the net:
"Then I downloaded newest x360ce's librares and configure my pad as Rumble Pad
2 in Thief/Binaries/Win32. Next I pasted x360ce all files to
Thief/Engine/Config, Thief/ThiefGame/Config and Thief/ThiefGame/CookePCNG. Just
to be sure. Now it's working." (source:

i did the same copied the files in those folders. and surprisingly after that
the gamepad worked!

now working. i am using windows 8.1 64 bit with usb joystick controller. if u r
no working. try this one. first download lastest x360ce
https://x360ce.googlecode.com/files/x360ce.App-2.1.2.191.zip. and then run it
(32bit : Thief/Binaries/WIn32) or (64bit : Thief/Binaries/Win64). go options
and check xinput9_1_0.dll. if you're on a 32-bit system, get the 32-bit library
(x86 version) https://x360ce.googlecode.com/files/x360ce_lib32_r848_VS2010.zip.
if you're on a 64-bit system, get the 64-bit library (x64 version)
https://x360ce.googlecode.com/files/x360ce_lib64_r848_VS2010.zip. unrar and
copy and replace all files where installed x360ce(i.e 32bit :
Thief/Binaries/WIn32 or 64bit : Thief/Binaries/Win64 ). now open x360ce.ini in
notepad and UNDER "Allowonlyonecopy=1" write " Version=1" save and close the
ini file. if u r using windows 8 or 8.1 rename xinput1_3.dll to xinput1_4.dll.

I also was having this problem, tried it with the 32bit version of the game,
used the older x360ce I use for most my games, 3.3.1.444.
Indeed it needs xinput9_1_0 to work, unfortunately I don't have the 64bit
version of 444 so I could not try if the problem lies with the 64bit version of
the game or with the latest version of x360ce.
Original comment by panele...@gmail.com
on 19 Jul 2014 at 12:09
I also found a way to get past this problem. Delete the xinput1_3.dll run the
the x360ce.exe it will say the input1_3.dll is missing and do you want to
replace it, click yes. It may stop responding and the window will close but
just click the x360ce.exe again, now both controllers should be green and
working.
Troubleshoot: If your game doesn't work with your controller, change the name
of the xinput1_3.dll to xinput9_1_0.dll
