Some Feedback on FamilyShow #3

Open leofal opened 3 years ago

leofal commented 3 years ago

Thanks for all the effort continuing this project. I've been using FamilyShow for years. Please allow a few annotations/experiences I made:

  1. I found problems with the GEDCOM Export/Import with the date-format, caused by converting months into days (vv). This leads to o WRONG Birth/Death dates in cases where dates make sense: 10.11. becoming 11.10. etc. and o LOSS of Birth/Death dates in cases where dates make no sense: 13.11. does NOT become 11.13. (since no such date exists) thus LOOSING these dates… :(
  2. I love the possibility to add pictures to persons. For future users: Would it be possible to have a note that says that importing of pictures is only possible when format = JPG? PNG (and may be others) are importing fine - but do NOT survive a File Close and Open - and a few hours of work is lost :)
  3. File size with now ~130 persons and with ~50 imported pictures with a total of about ~10 MB is 50(!) MB…! How big can a FamilyX-File get (before it bursts)?
  4. In one case the FAMILYX-file and all its date was LOST since after closing the file size suddenly was 0 (Zero). Opening of the file was possible but it was completely empty… I do now make a manual copy/paste of the file after each session. I would suggest a built-in backup-function (that e.g. ask upon exiting whether a copy is to be created automatically).
  5. An Excel-or Text/CSV-Export of the Database would be fine!

Thanks again for this wonderful solution - I am very happy with it. Best regards from Austria, Leo

Hello, Thank you very much for your feedback. I appreciate the feedback. I keep this project since I didn't want it to disappear from CodePlex. I don't spend much time to add newly requested features but I will if I have more free time in the future. Regarding your problem concerning dates, what is the version of your Windows? I develop on a French Windows pc. What is your local date-time format? Do you use the latest version v3.3? regards, Fred

date-time-format Hi Fred,

thanks for your reply.

My Windows Version is Windows 10 PRO - Version 1607 (Build 14393.447).

My local date-time format is – unfortunately in German

Datum = date, Uhrzeit = time, kurz = short, lang = long

T = Day M = Month J = Year

Thanks Fred and best regards, Leo

I exported a family project in GEDCOM format and the dates are correct for France (e.g. DATE 23/03/1990)

I've changed invariant culture to current culture in version 3.4 I've also added Windsor family sample Try this new version and try to export the Windsor family to GEDCOM format and tell me if it fixes the export issue, meaning the date format. It is ok in French but how about in German?

leofal commented 3 years ago

Sorry to say but: I did what you wrote

  1. Installed the new version

  2. Opened the new Windsor Example file

  3. Exported it as a .ged-File (btw: pls. see attached)

  4. Imported this .ged-File and…:

Kate Middleton, borne 09.01.82 has now the 01.09.82 as her birthday Prince William, borne 21.06.2019 now has no birthday.

LG, Leo
