timeout "active" and show obvious warning that the connection isn't working
can we probe wifi status? Phone sometimes goes over GSM, which then cannot reach the server in LAN

tracking through onerror is fine, but this could also use the mozconnection API, which may give a more meaningful error message (i.e. wrong or no wifi)
