Full support for arbitrary HTTP requests

I've changed this issue to cover the entire problem of making HTTP requests. It 
has been suggested on the mailing list that this should be something like the 
GWT RequestBuilder class. We can debate the merits of that API, but we'll need 
that level of flexibility at a minimum.
