I see the installation instructions are also present on the Wiki. But why is this change necessary?

The router now comes with firmware version 3.xx preinstalled which has a different flash layout. If you simply flash the openwrt/gluon image to the new location the kernel will not be able to find the root partition. Also with the wiki-method you don't have to open the device to get a serial console.
