Not looking to get this merged in immediately, mostly putting this here to get a discussion going on

Took inspiration from testing work in openstax/tutor-js and react-router test set-up/this blog post

Closing this because when I did the rewrite I wrote the tests using mocha and jsdom. Feel free to submit a PR and augment those!
