Please apply to GitHub Sponsors! #162

Mezzano is a truly outstanding contribution, and I again urge you to apply to GitHub Sponsors! This would be a great addition to your Patreon.

I believe GitHub Sponsors is a much better platform to seek Common Lisp funding than Patreon, notably because 92% of Common Lispers list members are already on GitHub, whereas only 5% are on Patreon (counting only those seeking funding there).

vaartis commented 4 years ago

I'd also suggest https://liberapay.com/, which, among other things, doesn't take any cut from donations (as it is run by a non-profit organization) and has some things allowing integration with github.

Hexstream commented 4 years ago

GitHub Sponsors also does not take any cut whatsoever. (Forever!)

"GitHub does not charge fees for GitHub Sponsors. We cover payment processing costs, so one-hundred percent of your sponsorship goes to the developers and projects you fund."

The most successful team on Liberapay is Liberapay itself, which is only making 17387.24$ a year. The second most successful team on Liberapay is making a paltry 6148.48$ a year.

I only know of two Common Lispers which are on Liberapay, and they're making peanuts. I conclude that from a Common Lisp funding perspective at least, Liberapay is very obscure and mostly a waste of time.

For comparison, I'm still fairly obscure and I'm already making ~202$/month~ 600$/month (after GitHub Sponsors matching) on GitHub Sponsors. (I have a concrete roadmap for a dramatic increase by the end of 2020.)

Thanks for reminding me. I got partway through setting up GitHub Sponsors earlier this year, I'll finish setting it up soon.

I'll pass on Liberapay, I'd like to keep the number of funding platforms to a minimum.

Thank you for joining GitHub Sponsors!

I am delighted to support you at your highest tier for this truly outstanding contribution! Consider setting a total sponsorship amount goal to help drive sponsorships, and this would prevent people from assuming you're making only a few dollars per month. ;)

I am relieved to see that you had indeed applied to Github Sponsors before the deadline, and that you are thus eligible for doubling! Congratulations! I'm curious, did you apply after I reminded you to do so or before? I'll add your GitHub Sponsors to your entry on the Common Lispers list, but I need to know at which month your doubler expires, first. That would be one year after you applied.

You'll also want to add your GitHub Sponsors to your Sponsor buttons on GitHub, and I recommend you upgrade to the default community health files feature to ease management.

Thank you for helping build our glorious Common Lisp future!

edit: Also, your patreon supporters should consider migrating their donations to GitHub Sponsors to benefit from doubling!

Wow, thank you very much! I originally applied in late December and was accepted on the 1st of January. I'll upgrade to the default files feature shortly, and add the Sponsors link while I'm doing that.

Hexstream commented 4 years ago

Wow, thank you very much!

My pleasure! You deserve it and so much more!

I originally applied in late December and was accepted on the 1st of January.

Wonderful! I was actually feeling guilty about not having insisted enough to make sure that you registered before the deadline, I thought you had missed the opportunity for the doubler, which would have been mega lame because Mezzano is such a worthy project! So that's quite a relief!

I added your GitHub Sponsors to your entry on the Common Lispers list. (You may need to refresh.) We are now up to 5 active GitHub Sponsors doublers, enter x2 in the search box to see all of these, or has:funding for all 13 who accept sponsorships or donations.

I'll upgrade to the default files feature shortly, and add the Sponsors link while I'm doing that.

Perfect!

Great!

Last thing to consider:

Consider setting a total sponsorship amount goal to help drive sponsorships, and this would prevent people from assuming you're making only a few dollars per month. ;)

That will be all. :) Keep up the great work!

hey there.

this is every silly and irresponsible of me, but because of Covid-19 i have had my superannuation released to me on compassionate grounds.

i absolutely adore Common LISP, and want to see this amazing project grow and flourish---i want to contribute both my time in coding Common LISP, as well as, perhaps, this money that i have had released to me.

i would like to contribute a lump sum---could someone talk to me a little about this via email or direct message?

Hexstream commented 4 years ago

I'm guessing the simplest thing to do would be opening up bigger tiers?

There could be Doubleword (128$/month) and Quadword (256$/month) or something like that...

(Would that be enough to contribute your lump sum within a reasonable timeframe?)

edit: I think you can also contribute almost any custom amount on Patreon, although that is NOT doubled, so much less interesting perhaps, especially for a "lump sum".

I guess this issue is closeable now.

Hexstream commented 4 years ago

Absolutely! I'm not sure why he hadn't closed it yet. Everyone please support this flagship Common Lisp project!

edit: Those already supporting him on Patreon should consider transferring their sponsorship to GitHub Sponsors to take advantage of the doubler!
