https://github.com/grafana/tempo is a very young project, but I think this is the correct direction.

About Jaeger, you still need Elasticsearch or Cassandra

BTW, I think the object storage is the most successful product provided by all the cloud companies with the same API (Amazon S3). There even been some decentralized object storage implement such as: https://www.storj.io
