I think we probably could do both ways: 1) v-dem t+1, t+2, t+3 (t+1 might be too short?); 2) I think democracy - autocracy regime change is good; but we may also have more detailed categories of regime type. May be closed autocracy; electoral autocracy; electoral democracy; liberal democracy? There is a data of dynamic comparative measures based on this categorization.. The changes among the types correspond to either of these processes: autocratic consolidation; democratization; democratic backsliding; democratic consolidation.
@sammo3182 @Tyhcass Focus on OECD democracies means we're looking only at either (a) all changes in v-dem democracy levels (i.e., backsliding and consolidation together) or just (b) negative changes only (just backsliding, with any positive changes coded zero).
There's at least a couple of ways to do this. One is the change in vdem from t to t+1. Another might be change in regime type; that is, democracy to autocracy and vice versa. I mean, we could do both (and whatever else we come up with), but it would be good/mandatory to (a) check the literature and (b) assess against theory. Thoughts on this?
