If one wants to try other replica types, one can omit the replicationFactor param and instead pass "tlog-replicas" and/or "pull-replicas" and/or "nrt-replicas" parameters with integer values.
This is a backward compatible change i.e. any configuration with replicationFactor will continue to work.
