Two thoughts: this would impact the request for multilingual autocorrect, but also do you ever need the additional characters when typing someone/thing's name outside your native language? I imagine Europe as the scenario for this and, if so, how would you expect to access the additional accents?
I'm not really sure how a display option would affect an auto correct feature, unless it offers words with characters not available, so correcting the auto correct becomes troublesome... Apart from that, creating a 2 level suggestion box might take care of it entirely. 1st level has the primary accents for the keyboard (closest to the source key) and the 2nd level holds all the related accents.
I've seen this and used it with great satisfaction on multiple keyboards (including SwiftKey). Basically, this opt-in feature is about disabling non-language specific accents on the long press accent selector.
For example, in Hungarian, there's only
á
, there's noä
,à
,â
,ã
,å
oræ
.Having the option to disable these extra accents for non multilingual people would increase their typing efficiency.
