[Feature Request] Recommended tab #893

Tell me if I'm way off, but I would like if there would be tab with recommended videos from channels that I'm NOT subscribed and Home tab can be only for new videos from channels that I AM am subscribed.

This is the only reason why I'm not completely on GrayJay and still using YouTube predominantly. I watch a lot (too much) YouTube and 95% of that are recommended videos. You could maybe even improve YouTube's way of doing recommendations. For instance, what annoys on YouTube (after tons of ads that are getting longer and more often, of course) is that they keep on recommending same videos over and over again, some videos even when I went to trouble of choosing 'Not interested' which could also be a lot easier with swiping left or right for example. Point of all of this is I (as many other people I'm sure) don't know what to watch or what to search, so recommendations are actually a great way to keep watching stuff someone is interested in without hassle of constantly thinking what to watch and then typing it in search. YouTube is popular for me because it switched me from watching TV program for topics that I'm interested in.

If you're logged into the Youtube plugin, you'd get the exact same home feed from Youtube in Grayjay. This sounds like the behavior you want for "Recommended". Grayjay has a video "Hide" feature, but it has some downsides, as this still means its getting that video from Youtube. simply hiding it. But may work for a video here and there.

The behavior of Home that you want sounds like just the Subscriptions tab. You can disable Home all together in Settings under Manage Tabs. You can also reorder Home/Subscriptions if you like.

We have plans for a custom recommendation algorithm, but this is a bit more down the line.

I'm not entirely sure what you'd like to have? Both these features seem to exist in the current Grayjay version.

First of all I apologize for my mistake. After I opened this article I realized that I am getting recommend videos (somehow it seemed to me that there were only videos from my subscriptions) so I am using Grayjay for that now. Sorry. However, it would be great if, or rather when as you say, recommendations algorithm would change that you take some of my suggestions, because this one on YouTube is not good.

Problems regarding recommendations on YouTube that I think you should consider while changing algorithm for Grayjay are:

  1. YouTube is a little bit to obsessed about my search or viewing one video on certain subject. For instance, I search how to fix TV, but YouTube after that one search and two watched videos of it thinks that I'm obsessed with fixing TV's and keeps recommending videos about it for a month it seems even tho I never open another video on that subject. Maybe algorithm should take in consideration if I watched for instance 5 or more videos on the same subject that it starts to give it as recommendations, and stop recommending that subject if I don't watch any newly recommend videos on that subject.
  2. YouTube has BIG problem with recommending constantly same video even tho I have scrolled over it more then 3 times and didn't watch it. Even worse, sometimes it keeps recommending video that I have specifically clicked 'Not interested' (or whatever it says in English). That is really infuriating.

In general as I said before, to me, and I think to many people, those recommended videos are substitute for TV. Therefore, recommended videos should not be all on the same subject just because I watched couple of those videos. It becomes boring pretty quickly (as it does constantly refreshing recommendations in hope it will give me some new subject), and I go to recommended videos because I want to watch something new, not a thousand and one variation on a same subject.

BTW, regarding one other post I have made regarding double progress bar in full screen mode - it was fixed and then came back after awhile. Also, while I'm at it, could the 'Auto-rotate dead zone' have more than maximum of 20 degrees that is now?

Thank you for reading and taking in consideration my comments.
