Works for me.

Setup and procedure for testing:

Navigate to Administer > CiviContribute Component Settings, and enable the setting "Automatically email invoice when user purchases online".
Open a live contribution page and therein submit a contribution.
Check whether a "Receipt" activity is created for the contributing contact.
