Schema docs could use more description on how to directly leverage the data structures defined #815

We could use better documentation on how to leverage the schemas to make use of the data structures that they define. This is a companion to #814 which may result in actual changes to the schemas.

Now that we have a development page in the documentation we can ameliorate this with some code there.
