Thanks for reviving this discussion - the last time there was any discussion about this, it was a choice between automatically ingesting the list of public servers off the wiki, or giving up on the feature altogether.
It was originally intended to work in conjunction with cloudlaunch, so that you could automatically publish cloudlaunch managed instances to this list, in addition to listing public servers, and was to include tool filtering and health checks among other features. However, we are not sure that this has seen a lot of adoption, and therefore, have not actively maintained the feature.

As Nuwan pointed out, the initial idea was to provide a central list of all public severs but there didn't seem to be any interest/adoption so we haven't continued to develop this. Do you have a different point of view Frederik?
As a reference, there is now a list of public servers in a machine readable format available at https://github.com/martenson/public-galaxy-servers/ and dashboard with the status of those servers: https://stats.usegalaxy.eu/d/000000020/public-galaxy-servers?orgId=1
Several of the listed public appliances (Andromeda, gigagalaxy, whale shark) are not up. If we want to promote CloudLaunch, it would be good that the links present work. I'm actually not sure what the purpose of this page is in cloudlaunch as it "just" seems to be a (subset?) of public instances, which do not necessarily support cloud launch
