Building the Galaxy non-coder community #280

Open pvanheus opened 7 years ago

pvanheus commented 7 years ago

At the BoF at GCC we decided that opening a Github issue against the hub would be the best way to continue the conversation about supporting and building the Galaxy non coder community. In part this is because the key role the Hub will play in this effort.

If you want to be associated with this effort, please tag yourself by commenting below.

Here were some of the points noted:

  1. Need a community page that uses something like all contributors or open badges together with some kind of community members list (perhaps somewhat like Software Carpentry's our team page).
  2. Channels for non-coder communication:
    1. The Galaxy Ambassadors concept: people who can take on being the "go to" person for a period (e.g. 1 year) perhaps on particular topics.
      1. This might integrate with Galaxy Biostars
    2. Galaxy Training Network - the "trainer community"
    3. Workflow authors & "power users"
  3. Events (perhaps organised in a "Mozilla Global Sprint" style around-the-world / around-the-clock style) can help "touch base"
    1. Schedule the first "get together" for September?
  4. Physical community events ("meetups" / "Galaxy beer") play a big role for non-coder community in some locations
  5. Need a whole discussion on Biostars

This is a rough draft of the discussion. Comments below, and let's start making plans!

I'm definitely in too. Thanks for starting this @pvanheus!

Thanks everyone, @tnabtaf can this be mentioned in a future Galaxy Updates notice? And is there a way to tag particular issues so "community building" issues can be collected together?

I don't want to talk too much before others join the discussion but perhaps if people can comment on the Galaxy Ambassadors concept and possible communication channels? Some things mentioned were:

  1. A page on Galaxy Hub with the current ambassadors noted.
  2. Linking Galaxy Ambassadors with GTN: perhaps linking ambassadors with topics there.
  3. Self-selecting: i.e. people can volunteer to wear a "ask me about RNASeq" badges and be listed somewhere on Hub.
  4. Linking with Biostars especially if we could somehow get tags on Biostars questions:
    1. Training materials topics could link to "ask a question about this topic" which created an appropriate post on Biostars with tags related to topic.
    2. A way to link tools / tool forms to Biostars (again with tags added to the post).
  5. (New idea from me) physical Galaxy Ambassadors badges and / or stickers.

I'm interested in building the non coder community. I'm an outreachy applicant. I'm in.

Oh I hadn't seen this old effort. Good to know about past work.

@DamilareOwoade I'm not sure what movement there is on this particular effort but at GCC 2021 we talked about implementing a community page on the Hub. The issue for that is here: #1155
