I have worked around some of the issues of using Carrierwave & Cloudinary with this gem:

file.path only works upon upload when you have a SanitizedFile, otherwise for already saved files there is no file.path method
Some problems and questions remain though:
I don't understand why the js uploader in the browser always uploads the image as raw post data
File size validations (or any validation for that matter) do not return a useful error because the mode is always 'default', returning nothing: true and not the actual model error - the result is an upload that seems to be forever loading
Since the data is posted as binary, the content type is application/octet-stream and therefore content type validations do not work (content type can be detected by asset post-processing, but that is too late, the validation has already failed)
The loader (preloader.gif) is showing twice, both as a broken image (because it looks for preloader.gif inside an images directory) and once as a css background, which works
