final draft #6

These are the final revisions I've made after Christoph updated the abstract, some image/table descriptions, etc. We (or just I) should re-read the text as a whole at least one time through to make sure everything is fine. I'll do this tomorrow or Thursday.

See the issues in this repo for things we still need to do for the paper.

It's hard to review the diff and I won't have time before Thursday. I suggest you merge and then you / we start from master in the coming days.
