This branch should now be fine. It doesn't implement anything, just cleans up the code. Once timing has been merged this one should be safe to merge also.

It's worth checking that the branch passes the tests though, since there are quite a number of lines changed.

There are issues with rebase. Closing this pull request and opening a new one created by cherry-picking the commits
