Even if users are used to the American spellings of words, all users should be able to understand the British spellings as well because they are not very different. We made a stylistic choice to use the British spellings, but this does not affect the usability of the guide.

Reason for disagreement: I believe that standards exist for a reason and they should be adhered to. If not, it can become hard to draw the line between "all users should be able to understand the British spellings as well because they are not very different" and otherwise.
Prof has also mentioned explicitly that documentation should follow American spelling here.
For example:
"capitalised" should be "capitalized" since American spelling should be used to cater to the international audience.
