weird encoding - again #104

Issue #60 ( http://code.google.com/p/iphoneebooks/issues/
detail?id=60&can=4 ) re-appeared in Books 1.4-pre03-r274

Switching from Automatic to any Central European encoding has no effect, 
glitches remain.

I've reopened Issue #60, so I'll close this one as a dupe.  I have a hunch on 
what's
wrong and should be able to take a close look at it this weekend.
