Cannot use unpublished styled receiver

1. Register styled receiver application; do not publish
2. Verify that preview works
3. Verify that your device is registered to the same account and is "Ready for 
Testing" and has "Send serial number to Google" checked
4. Use your application ID to cast to a registered device
5. Verify that you get a session error with "receiver_unavailable" error message
6. Verify that using another application ID (either default, or one taken from 
an example application) works correctly

After reading the documentation several times, I have concluded that everything 
has been done correctly, yet cannot test with an unpublished styled receiver.  
Any advice is appreciated on additional steps that I can take.
