Change exception behavior and add more tests #29

Maybe needs more tests before getting rid of the alpha-deadlock-quickfix tag ... but it has been in running code for some time, so maybe ok

I'd maybe add in the changelog that zip_in_out reraises exceptions but other than that it looks good, ship it!
